Diabetic Neuropathy: Is There No Balm In Gilead?
Jeremiah lamented a time when there would be no cure and no physician to cure what ailed his people. In diabetic neuropathy, sometimes there seems to be no real cure, but merely the aleviating of pain. Its true that physicians do have a role to aleviate pain, but where is the true “healing balm”. One such item I have found helpful in some diabetic patients is gamma-linolenic acid which is found in evening primrose oil or borage seed oil.
A dose of 500-1000mg once daily for 3-12 months is generally tried in the studies. I tell most patients to try it for at least 3-4 months to see if it improves pain, reduces tingling or burning, or improves sensation. It is generally quite safe with low risk of side effects. Generally, the only risk you take is just the cost. Its about $35 for a 3 month supply of borage seed oil. Not bad.
