Berberine
Berberine is an intriguing supplement Berberine is an ammonium salt derived from plants such as oregon grape and barberry. It has been studied in treating diabetes , high cholesterol, polycystic ovarian disease, and fatty liver disease. In these studies, reductions in body mass index were seen and weight loss occurred in some patients. Doses between 500mg 2 to 3 times per day are typically used. The cost varies between $15-50 per month. This week I was elated to find a berberine tablet at Sprouts for less than $15 per month. It is tough to beat that price in my experience. Berberine is proposed to work by regulating gut microbes to get them to burn fat better. When compared to metformin, a common type II diabetic drug, it seems to perform quite well. When compared to zetia (ezetimibe) for cholesterol, it also seems to hold its own well. What is holding back its use and promotion you might ask? Perhaps the fact that it is not patentable as a drug. One researcher postulated that its use might be limited because of its poor oral bioavailability. However, if berberine is acting on gut microbes mainly, as is suspected, this may be a moot point. If you decide to try berberine, make sure your doctor is aware and checks the blood levels. Check the brand you a purchasing before you do to make sure good manufacturing practices are used. I typically pick a brand from Thorne, Integrative Therapeutics, Vital Nutrients, Douglas Labs, or Biotics Research Products. There may be other good brands I am not aware of.
